Brighton Half Marathon 2012 – 13.42* miles against the wind

A windy Brigthon Half Marathon done in 1:56:39

Brighton Half Marathon was hard.

Although the weather had improved from the day before and was sunny, it was still quite windy and running on exposed seaside was a challenge.

In addition, I had left my earphones in London so my run was only accompanied by the sound of the crowds cheering, which was very nice, and the sound of my feet pounding the pavement, which was not that nice. With music I’m able to tune out the pounding and just move with the music. Without music, however, my body felt so heavy and my legs so stiff.

Best part of the day:  dance warm up before the run (I improvised as I couldn’t see the warm up leader)

Worst part of the day: constantly having to watch my step because the course was way too narrow for all the runners

After the finish line I didn’t collapse, didn’t feel the need to sit down, wasn’t thirsty or hungry or needing to go to the bathroom. Maybe I didn’t push myself too hard?

I think I have to learn to run a bit faster and let go of the fear that “what if I my legs will just completely fail me before the finish?”.  I don’t think they will, I need to trust them a bit more and give it a 100% not 98%.

Final time: 1 hour and 53 minutes and 51 seconds

*That is the adjusted time – the course turned out to be a bit too long for a half-marathon (13.34 miles instead of 13.1) and all times were adjusted a few hours after they were initially posted.

When Run to the Beat half marathon comes along in September, I WILL run it in less than 1:50. You just watch me! :)

  2. Congratulations! I have been reminding myself to come have a look at how you went. Now you know for next time that your legs won’t fall off and that you can push yourself a bit harder. It’s all a learning experience.

  3. I just read a great article in the latest issue of Women’s Running. The quote that made me thinking about how I write about my running:

“Sure, there will be people faster than me – but there will also be people who are slower. I’ve realised that banging on about my ‘slow’ time may make them feel the same as 1:45 girl makes me feel. The point is, however fast (or slowly) we run, we ALL have the potential to become that girl every time we berate ourselves in front of others. Of course, many of us would like to run a bit faster, but let’s try not to make ourselves – and others – feel bad in the process…. So next time you tell someone your race time, whetever it is, be proud of your achievement!”
