The trouble with sweet little choc chip cookies

I baked some cookies last week using this recipe. The kids looked at them and said “What?!? Porridge cookies?! No thanks!”.

Great.

They demand porridge every morning but when I put oats in baked goods it’s a no-go?

Oh well. My brain was frazzled and not thinking straight due to the joy of PMS… so I ate two that evening. It would be no big deal if I didn’t know clearly that sugar does not do my body nor my mind any good. Darn hormones.

Anyway, these babies are good. I would bake them on a regular basis IF I could handle sugar – IF I didn’t feel noticeably healthier, happier, stronger when I do not eat sugar.

So after my lapse last week (I had a couple the next day as well :|), I am now back to my sugar-free existence and feeling much better now that the sugar-bloating has passed. [...]

Home made chocolate is as easy as 1, 2, 3

I made a decision on 1st of January this year to stop eating sugar. There are many reasons for why I did that and amazingly it hasn’t been as horrible as I thought to give it up. Since I know now much more about what refined sugar does to our bodies, I have been trying [...]

Estonia: Why do the pastries here have to taste so darn good?

Estonia: Why do the pastries here have to taste so darn good?

After 6 months of not eating any refined sugar, I am finding it impossible to resist the pastries here in Estonia. Oh well. A bit of holiday indulgence won’t completely kick me off the wagon… I am sure of it because once I’m back in London, nothing will tempt me so much – no baked [...]

My new sugar-free sweet addiction

My new sugar-free sweet addiction

There has to be a bit of sweet stuff in a sugar-free life, right? ;) Well, since I love Nakd Cocoa Delight bars, when I saw a recipe with the same ingredients on Wag Doll’s blog, I tried it out straight away. Verdict – I love them so much that I cannot make them very often because…

Gluten and sugar free banana bread

Gluten and sugar free banana bread

I have not had any sugar for 103 days and I am totally amazed that I am indeed doing it. That it IS possible to be sugar free.

In the beginning I strictly stayed away from sugar substitutes as well, because I wanted to get over the cravings for sweet taste. By now though, I have realised that nothing goes better with PMS than a slice of cake :) …

Hungry for change

Hungry for change

The amazing film, Hungry for Change, on food and nutrition is available for free download for another 14 hours.

I learned some new stuff but the best part is hearing from a large group of experts that I am not nuts and that a diet free from sugar, gluten and processed foods is indeed the way humans were meant to live.

There’s so much interesting scientific information in that movie as well as many practical useful tips on how to feel AND look the best.

It’s good stuff,  trust me :)

Sugar free – 2 months – No more fat days!

Sugar free – 2 months – No more fat days!

I can’t really say that I have been a 100% sugar free since I started this ‘experiment’ on 1st of January – I eat yogurt, which more often than not has added sugar, I eat fruit (fresh and dried) and I have some strawberry jam on my oatmeal pancakes once or twice a month.

I have, however, stayed away from all other sources of sugar – cakes, pastries, chocolate, candy, peanut butter, Nutella, etc. [...]

Be positive and eat well

Be positive and eat well

For almost two years now I’ve been a runner. I’ve been slowly increasing my distance and am now doing two 15-18km runs a week.

I have found that running for more than an hour at a time requires some changes in what I eat:

a) To avoid getting runners diarrhea (lovely thing, let me tell you :), I absolutely cannot have any coffee before I run and I need to limit sugar and yeast in my diet.
b) To keep me from getting dizzy (which I tend to have a problem with) I need to drink a lot of water throughout the day, every day, and to avoid sugar.

I almost have my dizziness and digestion under control with a diet that doesn’t include any refined sugar, has limited wheat and yeast and lots of water.

However, in order to understand why I tend to have these issues in the first place, I sort of found an answer in the place I didn’t expect… [...]

Possibly the craziest new year’s resolution ever

Possibly the craziest new year’s resolution ever

This is my favourite cake – a sponge with crushed strawberries+sugar in the middle and lightly sweetened whipped cream and berries on top.

I usually make it for my birthday, and for anyone elses birthday as well if requested. If I could, I would actually make it for dinner every day, I totally have a sweet tooth and many times in the not so distant past I have skipped dinner to just eat cake.

Sugar doesn’t make me feel very well though, so last year I was sugar free for several months while I tried to figure out some health issues. Once they were figured out and the main symptoms gone, I went back to sugar… little by little it grew into a daily habit again. [...]
