So very British

One of the debates in the media here at the moment is the question of what does it mean to be British. The London Lite (my free newspaper of choice) today had a whole page of letters from people giving their suggestions. It’s odd how no one came up with anything more positive than having good fish and chips, roast dinners or seaside holidays. Here are my favorite letters though:

“So children are to have lessons at school in the values of “Britishness“. I would say being British means always accepting second best in everything, from transport and public services to sports. It’s about not questioning how or why your will was broken, and always believing that there’s a brighter tomorrow because not to do so would be too much to bear…”

and

“How would I define “Britishness“? Bad teeth.”

I’m sure Aussies can come up with better meanings to being “Aussie” and since today is the 26th – Happy Australia Day to all of our Aussie friends – you never have to worry about having second best or bad teeth :)

  1. These people here do not know their past, they do not celebrate their nationality and so all they have are their bad teeth.

  2. Happy Australia Day to you, James and Oskar as well!I wanted to go to Darling Harbour to celebrate…. But with the two little ones, better stay home. It's amazing that the shopping centre was so quiet on the 26th – only grandparents and young families like us around. Everyone else was out in the city partying. We went to Mark's parents, had a swim in the pool, and a very yummy BBQ lunch. That's what I think being an Aussie!
